Scrabble Words With Q But No U: The Complete List

May 23, 2026  ·  5 min read  ·  by Instant Word Finder

The valid Scrabble words that use a Q without a U include QI, TRANQ, QOPH, QADI, QAID, QANAT, QINTAR, QIGONG, and QABALAH. There's one tile in the Scrabble bag that strikes fear into casual players: the Q. Worth 10 points, but almost impossible to play without a U alongside it. Almost. There's a small but genuinely useful collection of Q-without-U words that are valid in standard Scrabble dictionaries. Learn them, and the Q stops being a liability.

These words aren't obscure tricks. Most of them come from Arabic, Hebrew, or Hindi roots that entered the English language and landed in the dictionary. They're real words with real meanings, and they're fully valid in competitive play.

Why Is the Q Both a Curse and an Opportunity?

The Q is worth 10 points, which makes it one of the highest-scoring tiles in the game. But there's only one of them in the bag and they're infamously hard to play. Without a U, your options shrink drastically. You can pass, you can swap, or you can play one of the words below.

The opportunity is this: when you know the Q-without-U words and your opponent doesn't, you're holding a secret. You can play QI confidently while they're staring at their own Q tile calculating how many turns they can afford to hold it before the game ends.

The Complete Q-Without-U Word List

Important: Word validity differs between editions. QI is valid in both TWL and SOWPODS. Some of the longer words above may only be valid in SOWPODS. Always verify with the word finder before playing in a competitive setting.

The One You Need to Know Above All Others

QI. Two letters, 11 base points, valid in both major Scrabble dictionaries. It means the vital force or life energy in Chinese philosophy and is widely used in English, especially in contexts around acupuncture and traditional medicine.

QI is invaluable because it's so easy to hook onto the board. You can play it horizontally or vertically alongside almost any existing word. Put the Q on a triple letter score square and you're looking at 30 points for a two-letter word. That's competitive territory.

Memorize QI before anything else on this list. Everything else is a bonus.

How Do You Set Up Q-Without-U Plays on the Board?

The key is position. Longer Q words like QINTAR and QANAT need specific letter combinations on your rack, which means you can't always force them. But QI is different. You just need an I, which is one of the most common tiles in the bag.

When you're holding the Q, scan the board for:

  • Any lone I tile on the board edge that you can attach QI to
  • An I at the start or end of an existing word where QI fits perpendicular
  • Premium squares (especially triple letter) within reach of your Q

For TRANQ, you need T, R, A, N, and Q. That's a reasonable combination to have late in a game when common consonants are back on your rack. It's also a bingo candidate if you can form it with six tiles and a seventh already on the board.

When Should You Hold the Q Versus Dump It?

Early in the game, holding the Q for a couple of turns makes sense if you're waiting for a U to appear or if there's a premium square you're targeting. The Q is worth 10 points, and a well-positioned Q-U play can score very well.

Mid-game, your patience threshold should drop. If there's no U in sight, no QI opportunity on the board, and no other Q word you can form, start planning to dump the Q rather than optimizing for the perfect play. A 14-point QADI is better than three turns of suboptimal plays while you wait for conditions that might never arrive.

Late game, never hold the Q. Unplayed tiles count against you at the end. A 10-point penalty from an unplayed Q can flip the result of a close game. If you can't play it cleanly, use the word finder to find any valid play that gets the Q off your rack, even a low-scoring one.

A Quick Study Method That Works

Write the list on a notecard. QI, TRANQ, QOPH, QADI, QAID, QANAT, QINTAR, QIGONG, QABALAH. Stick it somewhere you'll see it for a week. You'll have them all memorized without really trying, just from repeated exposure.

The longer ones will only come up occasionally. But QI will come up in almost every game you play. Once it becomes automatic, the Q shifts from being the tile you dread drawing to one you're actually happy to see.

Word validity varies between TWL (North America) and SOWPODS (international) editions. Always verify with your edition's official dictionary before playing competitively.
