About Instant Word Finder

Why We Built This

We got tired of slow, cluttered word finder tools filled with pop-ups, paywalls, and confusing interfaces that make you click through three pages before showing a single result. Most word finders are built for ad revenue first and user experience last. So we built a clean, fast, free alternative — one that loads the full Scrabble dictionary once, caches it in your browser, and delivers instant results on every subsequent search, even offline.

Instant Word Finder was created to be the tool we always wished existed: no mandatory account, no premium tier, no results hidden behind a subscription. Just type your letters and go.

What the Tool Does

Instant Word Finder is a free all-in-one Scrabble companion with three core tools accessible from the main navigation:

Additional tools include a Wordle Helper (green/yellow/grey clue matching), a Spelling Bee Helper (NYT Spelling Bee pangram finder), and a Word of the Day feature that surfaces an interesting Scrabble word each day with its definition and score.

Who Built It

Instant Word Finder is built and maintained by Skillnest Market, a solo independent developer focused on building fast, free, privacy-first tools for everyday use. We are not affiliated with Hasbro, Mattel, or any official Scrabble organization. All tools on this site are passion projects — we build what we want to use ourselves.

The site launched in 2025 and has grown through word-of-mouth from Scrabble players, puzzle enthusiasts, and competitive word game players who wanted a cleaner, faster alternative to ad-heavy word tools.

What Dictionary We Use

Our word finder is powered by the TWL06 (Tournament Word List 2006), the official North American competitive Scrabble dictionary. It contains over 170,000 valid words — every word from 2-letter utility plays (AA, QI, ZA) to rare 8-letter expert plays. This is the same word list used in official North American Scrabble tournaments sanctioned by the North American Scrabble Players Association (NASPA).

TWL is separate from SOWPODS, the international Scrabble dictionary used in the UK, Australia, and at the World Scrabble Championship. SOWPODS contains about 276,000 words — roughly 50,000 more than TWL, including many British English words not valid in North American play. If you play under international rules, some SOWPODS-only words may not appear in our results.

How the Word Finder Algorithm Works

When you type letters into the search field, the tool runs a client-side algorithm entirely in your browser — no server request is made for each search. On your first visit, the full TWL word list is downloaded once and stored in your browser's local cache. Every subsequent search reads from that local cache, which is why results are delivered in under 50 milliseconds regardless of your internet connection speed.

The algorithm works by generating all valid permutations and subsets of your input letters, then checking each against the dictionary. Blank tiles (?) are expanded to all 26 letter possibilities before the permutation step, which is why searches with two blanks may take a fraction of a second longer. Words are then scored using official Scrabble tile values and sorted by score, length, or alphabetically based on your sort preference.

Privacy — No Data Stored

We do not collect, store, or sell your search data. The letters you type into the word finder are processed entirely in your browser and are never sent to our servers. We use Google Analytics to understand aggregate site traffic (page views, geographic regions, device types) with IP anonymization enabled. We display Google AdSense advertisements to keep the site free. Neither service receives your search queries. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
