Words ending in TION are some of the most useful patterns in any word game. The suffix is everywhere in English, which means the moment you have T, I, O, and N on your rack, a whole family of plays opens up. Better still, many TION words carry high-value letters in front of the suffix, turning a routine play into a big-scoring one.
This page lists more than 50 valid TION words sorted by length, each with its Scrabble point value. We start with the short six-letter words that fit almost anywhere on the board, then move up through seven, eight, and nine letter words, finishing with the long ones that can land you a bingo. After the list you will find practical tips for spotting and playing these words in Scrabble and Words With Friends.

The TION ending is a ready-made anchor. If you can see the suffix forming on the board, you only need to supply the front of the word, which is often just two or three tiles. That makes TION words an excellent way to use a rack that is heavy on common letters. They also stretch nicely across premium squares, since most are seven letters or longer, so a single play can cover a double or triple word score while you build the rest off existing tiles.
The real prize is the high-value front letters. EQUATION puts a Q on the board for 17 points before any bonuses. FIXATION and VEXATION each use an X for 17. JUNCTION uses a J for 16. When you draw one of those awkward big tiles and you also hold the TION letters, you have a clean, powerful play waiting.

| TAXATION | 16 | X (8 pts) | 8 letters |
| JUNCTION | 16 | J (8 pts) | 8 letters |

| MOTIVATION | 15 | V (4 pts) | 10 letters |
| FRACTION | 13 | F (4 pts) | 8 letters |

1. Watch for the suffix forming on the board. If an existing word ends in T, IO, or ION, you can often extend it into a TION word with only a tile or two. A board word like RATIO becomes RATION with a single N, and ELATE can lead you toward related plays. Train your eye to spot the suffix taking shape.
2. Use TION words to unload common letters. When your rack is clogged with vowels and ordinary consonants, a six-letter word like NATION or RATION clears five or six tiles at once and keeps your rack flexible for the next turn. These plays are reliable even when nothing flashy is available.
3. Save the big front letters for premium squares. EQUATION, FIXATION, VEXATION, and JUNCTION all score well on their own, but landing that Q, X, or J on a double or triple letter square pushes the total much higher. Hold the play until the right square opens up if you can.
4. Reach for a bingo with the long ones. EDUCATION, OPERATION, SELECTION, and INFORMATION use seven, eight, or more tiles. If you can play all seven of your tiles in one of these, you collect the 50-point bingo bonus on top of the word score. Keep the TION letters in mind as a path to a bingo when your rack is balanced.
5. Remember the Words With Friends differences. Words With Friends uses its own dictionary and a different board layout, but the TION family is valid in both games. The bonus square positions differ, so the same word can score differently depending on where the premium tiles sit. Plan the placement around the board you are on.
