Scrabble Words With Double Letters, ZZ, SS, LL, OO & More

Double-letter words are among the most satisfying plays in Scrabble — and among the most useful. Words with double high-value letters like ZZ (BUZZ, JAZZ, FIZZ) score dramatically well, while words with double common letters (SS, LL, TT, OO) often fit smoothly onto crowded boards where single-letter plays are blocked.

The most valuable doubles in Scrabble are the ZZ words: each Z is worth 10 points, so a word with two Z's starts at 20 base points from the Z tiles alone. PIZZAZZ — with three Z's — scores 42 base points, making it one of the highest tile-value words in the game. Even short ZZ words like BUZZ (16 pts) and JAZZ (19 pts) punish opponents who leave a double-letter square exposed.

Double-OO words are useful in a different way: they absorb the troublesome "extra O" that often clutters racks (having three O tiles is a common rack problem), while scoring solidly and fitting common board patterns. VOODOO, TATTOO, SHAMPOO, BAMBOO, and TYCOON all pair a double-O with strong consonants for reliable mid-range scores.

Strategy: Playing Words With Double Letters

The best time to play a ZZ word is when a Z lands on a double- or triple-letter square. JAZZ on a triple-letter J square scores J(8×3) + A(1) + Z(10) + Z(10) = 45 points just for a 4-letter word — before any word multipliers. Because ZZ words are short (4–6 letters), they often land on premium squares that longer words skip past.

Double-L and double-S words excel at parallel plays. Because L and S appear commonly in racks and on boards, words like LLANO, SKILLS, SHELLS, HILLS, BELLS, and FILLS integrate smoothly without needing unusual tiles. An S tile on a double-letter square while forming a parallel SS word can produce surprisingly high scores from a low-value rack.

Double-OO words help drain problem racks. If you have O, O, O in your hand with no good play, looking for OO words that use two of them in one play — VOODOO (triple O!), TATTOO, IGLOO, or TABOO — converts a bad rack situation into a useful turn.

Are There Any QQ Words in Scrabble?

No — there are no valid Scrabble words in TWL or SOWPODS that contain double-Q (QQ). The letter Q appears only once in the standard Scrabble set (one Q tile), and no established English words use QQ. The closest exception would be words like QOPH where Q appears once without the companion U, but never twice in the same word in any major dictionary.

This is actually useful strategic knowledge: if you see someone playing a word they claim contains QQ, it is always an invalid play and worth challenging.

Using Our Word Finder with Double-Letter Searches

To find double-letter Scrabble words during a game, enter all your rack tiles into our word finder and use the Starts With or Ends With filter to narrow results to words starting or ending with your double-letter combination. For example, entering BUZBRD and filtering for "starts with BU" will surface BUZZ and related plays if your rack allows. Alternatively, sort results by Score and look for high-value outliers — those are usually the words containing J, Z, X, or Q tiles.
