High Scoring Scrabble Words: The Words Every Player Should Know

June 20, 2026  ·  7 min read  ·  by Instant Word Finder

The highest scoring Scrabble words are the ones built on the Q, Z, X, and J tiles, especially short words like QI, ZAX, and QUIZ played across premium squares. The gap between a good Scrabble player and a great one is rarely vocabulary size. It is knowing the right small set of high-value words and exactly when to play them. This guide covers the words that turn awkward tiles into big scores.

Why Are High-Value Tiles Both Assets and Liabilities?

In Scrabble, the Q, Z, X, and J tiles carry 10, 10, 8, and 8 points respectively. They are the highest-value individual tiles in the game. They are also the most dangerous tiles to hold, because they are the hardest to play and can leave you stuck with significant point penalties if the game ends before you use them.

The solution is knowing enough words using these tiles to play them quickly and effectively rather than holding them in hope of a perfect opportunity.

What Are the Essential Q Words Without U?

Most Scrabble players know that Q is almost always followed by U in English. What fewer players know is that there are legitimate Q-without-U words accepted in the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary (OSPD) and Tournament Word List (TWL).

  • QI The most important Q-without-U word in Scrabble. Valid in all major dictionaries. It means the life force in Chinese philosophy, and it saves you from being stuck with a Q when no U is available.
  • QOPH The nineteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Valid in tournament play.
  • QANAT An ancient irrigation tunnel system. Valid in some dictionaries, so check your specific ruleset.
  • QIGONG A meditative movement practice. Valid in many dictionaries.

High-Scoring Z Words

  • ZOEAE Plural of zoea, the larval stage of crustaceans. Uses Z plus common letters and scores heavily on triple letter or triple word squares.
  • ZAX A tool for cutting roof slates. Useful for playing Z alongside X, and ZAXES is its plural.
  • QUIZ Only 22 base points but frequently playable, and it uses both Q and Z if you are fortunate enough to hold both. Exceptionally high scoring on premium squares.
  • FIZGIG and ZINKY are legitimate higher scorers worth memorising for tight boards.

Two and Three Letter Words Every Scrabble Player Needs

Two and three letter words are the foundation of expert Scrabble. They allow you to play parallel to existing words, opening or blocking lines, and creating multiple scoring words in a single turn.

Essential two-letter words: QI, ZA (pizza), XI (Greek letter), OX, AX, EX, JO (a Scottish term of endearment), and the vowel-heavy twos AA, AE, AI, OE, and OI.

Essential three-letter words using high-value tiles: QAT (a shrub), ZAG, ZAP, ZIT, ZAX, JAB, JAG, JAM, JAR, JAW, JAY, JEE, JET, JIG, JIN, JOB, JOE, JOG, JOT, JOW, JOY, JUG, JUN, JUS, and JUT.

How Do You Maximise Points With Premium Squares?

The highest Scrabble scores come from placing high-value tiles on premium squares, particularly the triple letter score (TLS) and triple word score (TWS) squares. Playing a Z or Q on a TLS square before running the full word through a TWS square can produce scores of 80 to 140 points in a single turn.

Learning the positions of premium squares on the standard board and planning 2 to 3 turns ahead to land high-value tiles on them is the most consistently effective way to build score advantages. The same premium-square logic applies in Words With Friends, though the board layout differs, which we cover in the Words With Friends strategy guide.

The Highest Scores on Record

For perspective on what these tiles can do, OXYPHENBUTAZONE has been calculated as theoretically capable of 1,778 points across three triple word squares using tiles already on the board. In real play, MUZJIKS scoring 128 points as an opening move is among the highest single plays ever recorded. You will not hit those numbers often, but the principle behind them, stacking multipliers under high-value tiles, is exactly what you apply on an ordinary turn.
